While diving out at Futures reef a half mile outside of Hanalei Bay, I noticed something very strange at about 40 feet deep. I see a lot of large sea urchins (wana) on my dives but I just ignore most of them trying to avoid their long sharp spines. On this dive the water above several urchins was milky white and looked odd. When I got closer I noticed they were broadcast spawning! This is a rare event to see and shoot video of. The urchins shoot up a stream of eggs and sperm into the water to be fertilized. The fertilized eggs then float off to land somewhere else on the reef to grow. Corals also spawn in the same way but usually at night time. Quite a rare event to watch!
