A KHON2 News Special interviewing Terry about the mud problem plaguing Hanalei Bay right now. In Terry's words,
"There is a two foot deep layer of real thick mud in Hanalei Bay right now that I feel, as a biologist, may be unhealthy to marinelife and humans. Can we have this stuff tested so if it is toxic or filled with bacteria we can warn the public? Kids are playing in this stuff daily and it is disgusting. There is a very large sand bar that has developed at the end of the Hanalei River and this sand and mud build up has killed much of the remaining live corals in shallow water. I have this documented in MANY HD videos with time, date and GPS.
Other rivers in the area are not having this problem. I am diving and taking video of each river mouth from Ke'e to the lighthouse to compare the video of the reefs and marinelife in the same depths.
There is almost NO new coral growth in Hanalei Bay in shallow water (5 t0 15 ft) but there is lots of good new coral growth in the other bays at the same depth.
Any help you can offer on this subject will be greatly appreciated as I surf or dive daily in Hanalei Bay and I have had some very bad staff infections. Many other surfers are also suffering ocean related problems in Hanalei Bay."
