Listening to the Ocean

Listening to the Ocean
PhD students Simon and Lauren Freeman, from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, have been recording the sounds made by marine critters off the coast of Kauai and other Hawaiian Islands. They’ve been placing hydrophones offshore over the last few weeks to create a ‘soundscape’ of Kauai

Listening to the Ocean

…recording the noise produced by underwater animals such as shrimp and fish to gauge relative differences in ecological health. They hope to show a connection between recorded sounds and simultaneous photographic surveys.

They asked Terry to dive with them at Tunnels reef and Auhukini, to show them the best locations for their equipment and also make sure that conditions were safe to dive in these spots. Terry also videotaped the test equipment setup. This type testing will help us understand the differences between reefs located through out Kauai!
