Really enjoyed your talk with Junior Guards today. Thank you for coming down! Aloha, Patty
Aloha Terry,
I just read your article, posted on FB. I am also a concerned resident of Kauai. I have certainly noticed a change in water clarity and fish count in Hanalei over the last couple years. (Moved here in ’05, visited since ’01, but I don’t recall Hanalei having extensive coral reefs) Have you had the mud tested? Is there a direction correlation between the mud and infection?
We stay on the east coast two months each year and love our trips to Hanalei. Watching the second week of brown water here–and seeing Hanalei Bay several times this trip–has been alarming. Reading your 10/2011 post on the reef confirmed my fears. There is nothing so beautiful that humans can’t screw it up…especially when there is money involved. As is the case with so many areas on Kauai, no one should ever have been permitted to build so close to the streams entering the ocean.
