Giant Stingray at Koloa Landing

Was diving with my friend, Pam at Koloa Landing on Wednesday when this giant sting ray (hihimanu) just came out of nowhere and went right over our heads. We literally had to duck so it did not run right into us. This is the same type ray that killed Steve Irwin from the Crocodile Hunter and they are super rare in Kauai. Out of over 1,000 scuba dives I have done on Kauai this is the first one I have ever seen and I got it all on HD video close up!! This ray was over 8 feet long and had a 8 inch long spine on its tail. The ray went right over our heads then followed us for about 10 minutes. It came right up and looked right into the camera! What a great site to see at 30 feet deep along the south shore of Kauai. We were very careful to stay to the side of the ray so it could not use its tail or giant poisonous barb but it let us just cruise within a few feet of its four foot wingspan and look right into its eye. We had the feeling it was just as amazed to see us divers as we were to see the ray. When we broke away from the ray, as it was going into deep water, the ray turned around and came back again to follow us!
